Small Impressionistic Studies in Oils direct from Outdoors - Artist: Greg Howden

These works are a result from working directly outdoors. I use an entirely different approach to the figurative paintings that I paint in the studio which are quite structured and constructed over a number of sessions. I usually paint in the field with other artists in the same location and this helps me to see other interpretations. I generally use a 3 mm MDF board rather than canvas that has been carefully pre treated with acrylic undercoat. You can apply oils over acrylic but not the other way round. In the field a coloured acrylic wash is applied as an under painting. While the undercoat is drying on the multiple boards I set out my palette in oils and somehow things get underway and the painting comes together. The landscape colours in front of me get swapped around, the basis of a composition is formed and I get to explore one of my favourite pastimes, working with colour and something new is explored every time.
